HOW TO BUILD SUPERCOMPUTER FROM THE PS3!
Monday, December 22, 2008
Scientists at US university of Massachusetts Dartmouth-Professor Gaurav Khanna and PrincipalInvestigator Chris Poulin-have created a step by step guide to building a home brewed supercomputer that can also help reduce the cost of research computing.
Found on www.ps3cluster.org, the resource illustrates how to create a high performance supercomputer by using a soy playstation 3(PS3) in a grid.
"Science budgets have been significantly dropping over the last decade," Khanna said.
"Here's a way that people can do science projects less expensively. This new website will show people how to move forward."
Typically, scientists rent supercomputer time."A simulation can cost more than 5,000
hrs at $1/hour at any of the supercomputer facilities. For the same cost, you can
build your own supercomputer and t works just as well,"Khanna said."Plus you can use it over again and again.
The guide to bulid the PS3 grid is freely available to the public under na open source license.
As of now scientists are seeking input from industry and researchers to determine
future project direction.
